#210 Reviving the Lost Art of Handwritten Connections: A Journey Through Letters and Postcards

Scott Townsend

How often do we pause to appreciate the simple pleasure of a handwritten note? Reflecting on a recent postcard I received from my friend Rick Larkin, who visited the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, I found myself pondering the rarity and impact of these tangible messages in our digital age. Join me on this heartfelt journey where we rediscover the joy of connecting through letters and postcards, especially for those who might feel disconnected in our fast-paced world. Personal stories and interactions have reminded me of the importance of reaching out, not just through a screen, but with something they can hold onto and treasure.

I’m passionate about reviving this meaningful tradition and invite you to be a part of it. Whether it’s a quick hello or a heartfelt letter, let's bring smiles and warmth to each other’s lives, especially to our older loved ones who might not have much interaction. If you’re interested in starting a pen pal exchange, send a letter to the Scott Townsend Show, and I’ll personally write back. Together, we can celebrate the art of writing and the powerful connections it fosters. So, grab a pen, some paper, and let's make a difference, one letter at a time.

Speaker 2:

A friend of mine go to Ireland the other day or a couple of weeks ago now, and so yesterday we got. I asked him when he went over there to if he would send a postcard from Ireland. Celeste and I like to collect postcards from friends and family when they go travel around the world. So yeah, we got it yesterday. There it is, cliffs of Moher. That was really cool. Got that yesterday. Thanks, rick, for sending that. We'll add this to our collection. Nice little note on the back, scott and Celeste, thinking of you all in Ireland. All the best. Rick Larkin Got the official stamp. That's cool, but it also got me to thinking about how my brother asked me the other day when's the last time you got a handwritten letter? And it's been a very long time. Mom usually sends one, but other than that, no.

Speaker 2:

Another thing ran into an elderly person the other day and they were talking about how they never, never hear from their family or friends. They're very lonely and I thought that was sad, unfortunate. Definitely don't want to be in that position when I get to that age. So, with all these thoughts on postcards and handwritten notes and staying in touch and give it like we'll keep this postcard forever. Every letter I get, I I keep it, and people do that. They don't keep emails for very long, but these things will stick around forever. So I thought to myself you know what I think? I think I'm going to start writing. I'm just going to start writing letters. I don't care how old fashioned it seems or how antiquated, uh. These things, uh, mean more than sending an email or text or social social media posts. I'll still do those things, but I think I'm going to. What I'm going to do is be more purposeful in writing. It doesn't have to be a long letter. I'm not thinking I'm not unless I want to, unless something comes to me. I'm just going to keep it short and sweet. Hey, what's going on? Checking in on you? See how you're doing. Just give somebody something in the mail.

Speaker 2:

I think sending things in the mail is so cool. I don't know why that is. I just do that. You can send a piece of paper from your mailbox, someone takes it, it goes through the system and wherever you are in the world, it eventually makes it there. That's cool. So I'm going to start sending out letters. I'm going to do one today.

Speaker 2:

So if you're listening to this and you want a letter from me, from the Scott Townsend show, let me know. You can send me a letter. Yeah, send a little piece of paper, fold it up, put a stamp on it To the Scott Townsend show, 1316 Southeast Cherokee Avenue, bartlesville, oklahoma, 74003. And I'll write back so I'll know who to send one to. So yeah, if you're listening to this, let's start a little pen pal group or something I don't know. But yeah, send me a letter at the Scott Townsend Show at 1316 Southeast Cherokee Avenue, bartville, oklahoma, 74003, and I will write back and if you don't mind, I'll read the letter on this show. If you don't want me to read the letter, just say don't read this letter. But if you don't say that, then I'll uh, I'll uh mention you and your letter and we'll have a good time with this.

Speaker 2:

So write letters, write postcards. Write to your friends, your family, especially older folks that don't have a lot of contact with the outside world for whatever reason. Send them a note, send them a card, just a white piece of paper. It doesn't have to be complicated and that's it. So thanks for listening to this episode of the Scott Townsend Show. Everything you know, everything's going to be all right.
